Mtg Survival of the Fittest Mtg Fetid Marsh Art
We've express well-nigh of our Mirrodin Besieged discussions upwards to this point to Standard ... but in that location is a PTQ flavor going on!
So this week we are going to look at how the new set has impacted Extended, the present PTQ flavour format.
- Sword of Feast and Famine
The most impressive card for Extended so far—and possibly the virtually impressive bill of fare from Mirrodin Besieged over all—is Sword of Feast and Dearth. Earlier nosotros get into specific decks, I idea information technology might exist interesting to think about simply how good Sword of Feast and Famine is.
Last week on Twitter there was some discussion around Sword of Feast and Dearth versus Sword of Trunk and Heed. Personally, I don't think at that place is much argue here. What does Sword of Body and Listen do? It makes a Wolf token and flips over ten of your opponent's cards. I think Conrad Kolos was the outset person to look at information technology this way, but... what should that cost?
Personally, I think that Millstone-Wolf should cost almost two mana. Mayhap three. Only no one would play it for three mana. Is flipping over ten cards good? Information technology can be, and at that place are situations, like when you have a Fauna Shaman or a Survival of the Fittest, where drawing multiples tin can exist degenerate. But in general? Just flipping over x cards isn't much to write domicile about. Instance in point: many players were skeptical about playing Broken Ambitions, because if you lot won the disharmonism, you lot might exist improving the opponent's draw.

Now how would you cost the ability on Sword of Feast and Famine? How much should forcing your opponent to discard a card—simply untapping all of your lands as well—cost? Turnabout broke Extended at iv mana, and so I'm guessing some amount of mana greater than four!
Here is a different way of looking at Sword of Feast and Famine that Steve Sadin and I came upwards with last week: What is a turn? Brian Weissman used to say a turn could by and large exist boiled down to ane) cartoon a card, and 2) playing a land. You can also attack... simply it's generally mana and cards.
And that's what Sword of Banquet and Famine does ya for.
By forcing the opponent to discard a card, Sword of Banquet and Famine kind of takes away half a turn. And while you don't go a state drop, the "untap all your lands" ability on the new Sword is very reminiscent of the other one-half.
Back in 1997, we used to accept a saying "Everything is a Fourth dimension Walk," and attributed that to anything from a Man-o'-War to a Retentivity Lapse. Well, Sword of Feast and Famine seems quite Time Walk-ish to me.
While, as an artifact, Sword of Feast and Famine can go into a practiced number of unlike decks, there are two main styles that seem perfect for information technology: White-Blue and Faeries.

This deck, played to the win by __SipItHolla, is very reminiscent of the Standard CawBlade that so dominated Pro Tour Paris.
Once again, we encounter a Stoneforge Mystic package to detect just two pieces of equipment; over again nosotros come across a very successful cease. Extended's White-Bluish deck is much improved on the creature front. Instead of Squadron Hawks, we have Kitchen Finks... and in terms of i toughness flyers, __SipItHolla had Vendilion Clique to mess with combo decks.
A similar build with an additional Jace, the Mind Sculptor and a slightly dissimilar mana base (in exchange for some board control) was played to a Top 4 end by _ShipItHolla.

You lot tin can tell how important Tanahashi'southward modify was considering and then many other Faeries decks have taken up the banner since Masayasu's 2nd place in Paris.
Sword of Feast and Dearth, here, is taking the identify vacated by Umezawa's Jitte. The Sword merely costs one more than mana than Jitte did, and is arguably more synergistic in Faeries. Yous see, Faeries is a deck that is generally interested in playing spells on the opponent'south turn: Mistbind Clique during the upkeep, Spellstutter Sprite in response to a threat, or Vendilion Clique at the end of turn (or whenever seems the best opportunity).
Though Faeries certainly has some spells it has to play on its own turn, afterwards yous've got the second-turn Bitterblossom down, those cards are mostly express to 1-mana Thoughtseize or Inquisition of Kozilek.
... And so what'southward the bargain with Sword of Feast and Famine in this deck?
Aye, you have to invest three on your ain plough (one time), and and so any time you want to equip your creatures, you lot have to invest ii mana on your own plow. However, untapping all your lands is bluntly awesome for a deck that wants to play more often than not on the opponent's turn! And though Faeries doesn't play a whole heck of a lot of creatures, Bitterblossom gives y'all a never-ending stream of potential swordsmen. Making them Protection from Black and Protection from Green is just fantastic in this format.
Do you know what is a full disaster (at least for the opponent)? This:

Another existing deck that has benefited from new options in Mirrodin Besieged is Steel Artifact.
Signal Pest fits right into this deck, which was already focused on playing multiple artifact creatures and attacking in a gang with large ups from Master of Etherium and Tempered Steel. Not only does Signal Pest also get the same bonuses, but shares the love—or in this case the mean, hateful, violence—with its boyfriend attackers.
Just what really classes upwards the articulation is Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas.
Tezzeret gives Steel Artifact yet some other large threat; but unlike Principal of Etherium and Tempered Steel, a way to win that does not require the ruby zone. Tezzeret's "Impulse"-like ability has a very loftier batting average in this deck (Schieffer's Steel Artifact is greater than 50% artifacts), and while all three abilities shine in Steel Artifact, the speed and savagery of his ultimate are unprecedented.

Coffey waded through a sea of Faeries, Jund, and Scapeshift to accept home Mobile's Blue Envelope with what looks similar a Standard deck!
This is a Kuldotha Ruby swarm deck, using Signal Pest and Contested State of war Zone to bargain a ton of damage very chop-chop. With an optimal draw, Coffey can actually win on plow two:

Turn I:
- Mountain, Signal Pest, Memnite
- Mox Opal, Cede Mox Opal to Kuldotha Rebirth
- Mox Opal, Sacrifice Mox Opal to Kuldotha Rebirth
- Stop with Mount, Point Pest, Memnite, and half dozen ane/1 Goblins
Plow Two:
- Topdeck and play Contested War Zone.
- Attack with everything....
- Point Pest (0), Memnite (ii), six Goblins (12)
- Activate Contested State of war Zone...
- Signal Pest (1), Memnite (3), six Goblins) (18)
- Yer dead.
And then what's not Standard almost this deck?
Magma Spray only, and that in the sideboard?
It's pretty exciting to see a deck in this position perform likewise as information technology did.
And so what nearly Flayer Husk? In this deck, Flayer Husk is just another Memnite, albeit one that costs a mana instead of no mana; all the same if you get into a trade state of affairs with the living weapon, you tin can at to the lowest degree move the Flayer Husk around to pick upwards a signal.
- Hero of Bladehold
On the subject area of niggling guys and Battle Cry, reiderrabbit added the showcase battle cry threat to a Bant Aggro deck.

The improver of battle weep makes for an interesting tension. On the 1 hand, you have a strategy traditionally based on creatures attacking lone. Noble Hierarch and Qasali Pridemage showcase the Bant signature mechanic early, then Finest Hour, the ultimate in exalted, tops things off as a finisher.
But with Hero of Bladehold, y'all take a creature that not just doesn't attack alone, but never attacks lonely!
... Except when it does.

Yous can attack with Hero of Bladehold, put exalted (and even Finest Hour'due south other triggered ability) on the stack, arrive for bonus damage, line up the little Soldiers, get exalted, requite away boxing weep, and basically intermission more than rules than Ric Flair in the 80s.
Beautiful.
And like Hitting-Girl from Kicking-Donkey, cute and deadly.
Say all yous did was accelerate into Hero of Bladehold with Noble Hierarch, then bandage a fourth-plough Finest Hour and attacked solo with the Hero. This is what would happen:
- Hero of Bladehold attacks.
- Stack two exalted triggers, Finest 60 minutes's other trigger, boxing cry, and Hero of Bladehold'south token trigger.
- Hero of Bladehold makes two lilliputian guys, which and then become battle weep bonuses (ii and 2).
- Hero of Bladehold untaps thanks to Finest Hr, with an additional gainsay stage on deck.
- Hero of Bladehold gets ii exalted bonuses.
- You are now attacking with Hero of Bladehold (5), and ii Soldiers (iv)—ix damage.
- Unbelievably (retrieve, we are the captain of the Four Horsemen here), yous get another attack! Hero of Bladehold goes in again, this time starting at 5 ability. (The two tokens are still tapped, and don't have haste anyhow, so they stay home.)
- Stack 2 exalted triggers, battle weep, and Hero of Bladehold's token trigger.
- Hero of Bladehold makes 2 more than footling guys, who get battle weep bonuses (2 and 2).
- Hero of Bladehold goes from five to 7 power thanks to exalted.
- You lot are now attacking with Hero of Bladehold (vii) and two Soldier tokens (4), for xi total. With your initial 9, that's lethal!
Information technology's pretty unlikely you get in, like this, in this kind of a situation, merely it is certainly ticklish to know that exalted and battle cry can concord hands and break the rules together!
In improver to Hero of Bladehold reiderrabbit played another new menu, Mirran Crusader. A double strike beast is patently absurd with exalted and Elspeth, Knight-Errant. 1 trip "to the air" can send Mirran Crusader over for 12+ damage with the help of a Noble Hierarch and the best of the white planeswalkers.
Here's another look:

Azulah finished just out of the Acme 8 of the recent Magic Online PTQ. I just wanted to highlight the aforementioned potential combinations in Naya.
For a moment I got super excited about Stoneforge Mystic in this deck, which can set up Behemoth Sledge. Unfortunately, that particular equipment is a non-bo with Mirran Crusader's protection from dark-green ability. That'due south not to say that there aren't vicious possibilities in this deck, just that we won't soon meet a marriage betwixt these two three-drops.
As we tin see, Mirrodin Besieged has a ton to contribute to the PTQ thespian. Even the most established, linear deck in the format can benefit from its premier Equipment, and pretty much everyone from Naya to Steel Artifact tin can get a boost. Standard decks are graduating and claiming Blueish Envelopes... and they are probably just the outset.
